Apple AirTag and Kite Bags – Why I Don’t Travel Without One Anymore

I’m not affiliated with Apple at all, but after hearing enough horror stories, I’ve realized that I really need an AirTag in my kite bags when I travel, more than ever, and that you should do too, especially if you are joining one of our kite safaris…

FIRST OF ALL, WHAT IS AN AIRTAG?

An AirTag is a small device that tracks your kite bag, wherever it is. Its location appears on a map, and you can check at any time where your bag is. One important detail: you need an iPhone to use an AirTag. Another detail: the AirTag can only update its location when an Apple device is nearby, but this obviously happens all the time, since so many people have Apple devices.

HORROR STORIES

This Argentinian guy (I can’t remember his name) was travelling without an AirTag, and he had two kite bags. One was lost on his way to the yacht, at Rome Airport, and the other was lost on the way out of Egypt, in the transfer van. In both cases, he didn’t have an AirTag. He cried. Luckily, everything turned out OK. On his way back to Buenos Aires, he found his bag at the airport, stuck in some storage area, while I was able, after a full day of research, to retrieve his other bag, forgotten in a corner of the transfer van. But all of this could have been avoided with an AirTag.

Philip was recently travelling from New York to Naples, and he had an AirTag in his luggage. Imagine his surprise when he landed in Italy and, while waiting for his luggage, he saw it travelling back to New York, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. He had to travel to Egypt the following day for a Kite Safari, but thanks to the AirTag, he was able to monitor exactly what was happening to his luggage and got back to the airport just as the luggage was landing. He saved a lot of time and managed to get his luggage in time to make it to his next destination.

AND IF I DON’T HAVE AN IPHONE?

I’ve honestly no idea. I’ve never tested anything myself, but there must be alternatives that work just as well, and a simple Google search should help you find one…

WHAT I REALLY WANT TO SAY

Make sure you have a way to track your gear, because if it gets lost, it makes it so much easier to find and retrieve it… Right now i’ve around 8 Air Tag – I got even one for my dog, but also for my backpack, regular luggage, kite luggage, car key, one even in the car (I forgot where I park it sometimes). Ok, 8 is maybe a bit too much, but I can recommend to get at least one to drop in your checked in luggage if you are travelling. Remember the Horror Stories!
