When NOT to Join a Kite Safari

I recommend kite safaris all the time, it would be weird if I didn’t, since I organize them. That doesn’t mean, though, that it’s always a good time to go on one. There are periods of the year, specifically January and February, when going on a kite safari in Egypt is not only discouraged, but simply not done. By anyone. Let’s quickly look at why this happens (I don’t want to waste your time).

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT COME IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY

It’s colder than usual. It seems quite silly to go on a kite safari during the two coldest months in Egypt. One of the biggest misconceptions is that summer in Egypt is hot hot hot – that is true for the cities, but on a yacht, in the middle of the Red Sea, there is no better place to be. I promise. The Sick Dog team loves summer kite safaris. A January or February kite safari? Not so much… It would be impossible for me to find someone from my team willing to join, and personally, I wouldn’t want to be on board either. And if I don’t want to be there, why should you?

The wind is less reliable. Check anywhere, look at the statistics, talk to anyone – January and February are statistically the least windy months in Egypt. Period. So it does seem a bit silly to organize a kite safari, which depends on decent wind, during the worst wind months. Right?

WHY I REALLY DON’T ORGANIZE KITE SAFARIS IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY

First of all, nobody does. As explained above, those are the main reasons. But there is also a third, more personal reason that pushes me not to schedule anything in January and February.

I need a break. I leave Egypt, see something new, explore, and get off the boat for a while. It’s that simple 😉

So fundamentally I’m waiting for you to join me starting from March – I (and the rest of the team) will be ready.
