Taxi from Hurghada Airport – What Is the Best Way to Get a Transfer?

Arriving at Hurghada Airport can be a not-so-great experience. While in Europe we are used to easy and smooth transportation from the airport to the hotel, when you exit Hurghada Airport, your options are not only limited but also frustrating and borderline upsetting. Let’s take a look at what’s available and what the best way to get around is.

TAXIS

Seems simple, right? Get out of the airport, grab a taxi, and you are good to go. Not really. Taxis don’t use a taximeter (they have are not updated with current prices), so you usually have to negotiate your fare right outside the airport. Personally, I don’t like it at all. I want to pay a clear and fair price – I don’t want to feel like I’m being scammed within five minutes of entering the country. On top of that, your room for negotiation is limited, especially late at night.

What is the right price? For a ride within Hurghada, it can be around €10 to €15, depending on where you’re going. To El Gouna, I’d say around €30. But honestly, I’m not completely sure, because I simply don’t take taxis when I arrive at Hurghada Airport. Ever.

UBER

Uber works in Egypt, but not well at the airport. You can book a ride, but after a long wait, the driver will often ask you to cancel the trip and pay cash instead – usually an arbitrary amount. What’s the point of being an Uber driver if you don’t follow the basic logic of the platform? I understand that Uber rides are very cheap in Egypt, but the solution can’t be to bypass the system entirely. Anyway, getting back to the point – Uber is not the way.

PERSONAL DRIVER

This is the way. You need a trusted driver who will pick you up at the airport. All you have to do is message them on WhatsApp well in advance, agree on the transfer cost, and share your name, arrival time, and flight number. That’s it. If you need a driver, simply contact me and I will point you to the right persons.

One thing: don’t negotiate the price with my drivers. The price they will give you is fair for the service you receive, and most importantly, it saves you all the hassle and frustration that taxis or Uber can bring when you arrive. And that’s worth it.
