As a few of you may have noticed, I started talking about different topics rather than just kite safaris in Egypt. There are a few reasons for this:
- I’m running out of ideas. I noticed I started being repetitive and boring to read. Maybe I’m always boring to read, but for sure, writing the same thing over and over, kite safari, kite safari, kite safari, was maybe a little too much…
- Egypt is king, but maybe there are some other kitesurfing kingdoms out there to explore?
That’s why I’ve decided I will (slowly) start writing articles about other kitesurfing destinations around the world, and today I wanted to talk about kitesurfing in Sri Lanka. I’ve been talking with the guys at Kitesurfing Lanka (KSL), and they seem super enthusiastic about what they do (a bit like me). They’ve spent years building a place for riders who want more than just a holiday – they want an adventure, a little bit like me.
1. Endless Wind?
In Kalpitiya, there is not just one «kite season»; there are two distinct windows of good conditions:
Summer (May to October): The best. Expect 20–30 knots almost every single day. It’s warm, consistent, and powerful.
Winter (December to March): Lighter. 15–20 knot winds under blue skies, a great place to escape the winter in Europe.
2. The Lagoon vs. The Ocean – why not both?
The Kalpitiya Lagoon offers flat, flat, flat water, making it one of the best places in Asia to kite. If you instead, like me, prefer the open sea, the Indian Ocean is just a sandbar away…
3. Different kite spots
For those used to the adventure of a kite safari, you can ride straight from the camp at the KSL Lagoon or explore nearby spots like Donkey Point, or go even further: boat trips can take you to remote sandbanks and hidden lagoons like Dream Spot or Vella Island.
4. Good Vibes
The place feels real. What I mean, it’s remote, cozy, and made to disconnect. Yoga, healthy food, and great vibes overall.
I was in Thailand this year, and I couldn’t kite there because I got homesick and had to fly back to Milan (yeah, it really happened). But next time I’m in Asia, I’ll do Thailand and visit the guys at KSL in Sri Lanka (if they give me a good price).
